Walford Anglican School For Girls
Campus Re-Development
The Campus of Walford Anglican School for Girls is located on a densely developed site in Unley, which restricts the development opportunities for additional education spaces. The high density site also meant that it could not cater for temporary interim learning spaces on site during construction.
Matthews Architects developed a multiple staged masterplan for the site, the sequence was carefully designed to address the ongoing provision of the curriculum as well as cash-flow. The Masterplan includes 9 building stages all of which are dependent on the previous stage.
Matthews Architects identified this as a high masterplan risk. If one of the stages would not obtain planning approval, any subsequent stage could not proceed. Proposed street boundary development directly adjacent residential zonings and the proposed works to a heritage building added to the complexity of the masterplan and created a planning approval risk.
As a solution, Matthews Architects undertook sketch design for all 9 stages and lodged a comprehensive planning application with the local council, which was approved, giving the board confidence that the masterplan was not only a vision, but could be achieved.
