The University of Adelaide
Vibro-Acoustics Research Facility

This project included the provision of Architectural and Interior Design services to adapt an under-utilised space and three underperforming acoustic test chambers into a highly flexible and engaging learning environment, supported by enhanced test chambers (source, receiver and anachoic) with new capabilities.

Matthews Architects lead stakeholder engagement meetings to refine the brief and develop a shared vision for this very technically complex project. Our team integrated specialist consultant advice throughout the design process.

The design also increased visual engagement within the campus, by adapting the existing facades with new large shaded windows and creating ways for occupants to visually experience the chambers. Our team also humanised the spatial language by coining nicknames for the chambers; shout, echo and hush.

The creative design, in response to a technically challenging brief, led by a team that enthusiastically immersed themselves in the science, has delivered a world-class vibrations and acoustics research facility with new and improved capabilities.
